September 16th, 2009: GOOD THINGS HAPPENED 40 YEARS AGO, SUE AND AMADO FELIX AND THE WASHINGTON SLAGBAAI NATIONAL PARK
27 July 1969----A young Bonairian man took a young American woman, a Trans World Radio “summer worker”, to the newly opened Washington National Park. The highlights of the park were a visit to the home and gravesite of the late Mr. Herrera, a view of the grazing savannah, and a short climb to the lighthouse. The entrance tickets to the park were taken back to the United States by the woman and included in a scrapbook of memories of “The Summer of 1969 on Bonaire”.
June 2009----The scrapbook was discovered when this same woman was going through old boxes of “stuff”. What a surprise to find the 40 year-old entrance ticket to the 40-year old park!!!!
27 July 2009----This same couple, Sue and Amado Felix, married for nearly 38 years and owners of Achie Tours and Transport NV, returned to the Washington-Slagbaai National Park Visitor’s Center to buy a current pass to the park.
We asked this couple about the Park’s development and changes they’ve noticed during all these years. Sue tells us that she noticed many improvements. In 1969 there was practically nothing, during the years it turned into a real Park, something to be very proud of. Just to name a couple of things, the yellow and green routes have been expanded, climbing the Brandaris has been made possible, and Slagbaai has become a nice place to go and spend the weekend. She does regret that her favorite route to the back of the Goto Lake disappeared, but really appreciates the major improvement of the roads. But above all she is very happy that the Park is kept natural like it has to be.
Sue’s favorite place in the Park is Boca Kokolishi. One of her most memorable times was when she saw a caracara for the first time. It was walking in the sand dunes at Playa Chikitu---a beautiful sight of the stately bird on the unusual sand dunes.
Both, Sue and Amado are very appreciative of the forethought of Mr. Herrera and his desire to create a national park. Even though there was not much development on the island 40 years ago, he realized the need to put restrictions on some areas in order for future generations to enjoy the Bonaire that he loved so much.
The year 2009 is not only a very special year for Sue and Amado Felix, but also for Bonaire. STINAPA Bonaire is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Washington National Park (WSNP) and the 30th anniversary of National Marine Park (BNMP). Throughout the entire year STINAPA has special events and activities to celebrate with the people of Bonaire.
STINAPA wishes Sue and Amado many more happy years to come, in which they will continue to share their love and knowledge of Bonaire’s nature and culture with the visitors and the people of Bonaire. We also would like to thank them for sharing this special moment with us.
GELUKKIGE MOMENTEN VAN 40 JAAR GELEDEN HERLEVEN; SUE AND AMADO FELIX EN HET WASHINGTON SLAGBAAI NATIONAAL PARK
27 juli 1969 ---- Op die dag nam een jonge Bonairiaan een jonge Amerikaanse vrouw mee voor een uitje in het pas geopende Washington Nationaal Park. Zij was een zomerwerker van Trans World Radio. De hoogtepunten van het dagje uit waren een bezoek aan het huis en het graf van wijlen Julio Herrera, een stop op een uitkijkpunt over de vlakte en een korte klim naar de vuurtoren. De jonge vrouw nam de toegangskaartjes voor het park mee terug naar de Verenigde Staten en ze gingen in een plakboek met de titel: “The Summer of 1969 on Bonaire”.
Juni 2009 ---- In deze maand werd het plakboek tussen de inhoud van wat stoffige dozen teruggevonden. Wat een toeval om daarmee, na exact veertig jaar, in het jaar van de viering van het evenzo oude Washington Slagbaai National Park, diezelfde, intussen historische, toegangskaartjes weer in handen te krijgen.
27 juli 2009 ---- Hetzelfde stel, Sue en Amado Felix, nu bijna 38 jaar getrouwd en eigenaren van Achie Tours and Transport NV, keerden in deze maand terug om opnieuw kaartjes voor het park te kopen.
Wij vroegen het echtpaar om wat te vertellen over de veranderingen die ze in het park hadden waargenomen gedurende al deze jaren. Sue had vooral de verbeteringen die gaandeweg in het park zijn aangebracht, bemerkt. In 1969 was er praktisch niets maar in de loop der jaren is het in een echt park veranderd, iets om erg trots op te zijn. Om maar wat te noemen; de gele en groene routes zijn uitgebreid, het is mogelijk gemaakt de Brandaris te beklimmen en Slagbaai is een prachtige plek geworden om het weekeinde door te brengen. Toegegeven, haar favoriete route naar de achterkant van het Gotomeer is verdwenen, maar ze vindt het geweldig dat de wegen in het park nu zo veel beter begaanbaar zijn. Maar bovenal is Sue bijzonder blij dat het park haar natuurlijke uitstraling heeft behouden en zo hoort het uiteraard ook.Sue’s favoriete plekje in het Park is Boca Kokolishi. Een van haar meest onvergetelijke momenten was toen ze voor het eerst een caracara zag. Hij liep statig over het zand van Playa Chikitu, een prachtig gezicht.

Zowel Sue als Amado zijn erg dankbaar voor de vooruitziende blik van Julio Herrera en zijn wens om een nationaal park te creëren. Hoewel er veertig jaar geleden maar weinig ontwikkeling op het eiland plaatsvond, realiseerde hij zich toen al dat er in bepaalde gebieden beperkingen moesten komen zodat toekomstige generaties ook zouden kunnen genieten van het Bonaire dat hij zo liefhad.
Het jaar 2009 is niet alleen een zeer speciaal jaar voor Sue en Amado Felix maar ook voor Bonaire. Het jaar waarin STINAPA Bonaire het 40-jarig jubileum viert van het Washington Slagbaai National Park en het 30-jarig jubileum van het Bonaire National Marine Park.
STINAPA wenst Sue en Amado nog vele gelukkige jaren toe waarin wij wensen dat zij hun liefde en kennis van de Bonairiaanse natuur en cultuur zullen blijven delen met de bewoners en bezoekers van Bonaire. Tevens willen wij hen, langs deze weg, danken dat ze dit wel heel speciale moment met ons allen hebben willen delen.
