June 15th, 2009: More than 1,000 people visited the Park

On Sunday May 31st STINAPA celebrated that 40 years ago the Washington plantation became a protected area. This took place at the entrance to the park in conjunction with the ‘Marshe di Rincon’ (Rincon Marketplace) and the people of Bonaire. More than 1,000 people entered the park that day. Starting early in the morning events took place including a run and a fun walk and breakfast.  Afterward there was a lunch of “Krioyo” (local) food and a barbeque at the entrance of the park. Local people and visitors alike, hiked, climbed mountains, cycled or swam at Slagbaai. There was a delightful cultural show, with music and dance.

The day started early with a run and a fun walk, organized by STINAPA with the help of the COMCABON (Bonaire Running Committee). The participants met at the bust of Jules Abraham, at the fork in the road at the beginning of Rincon, and walked or ran towards the entrance of the park. All participants received a certificate as proof of their participation.

At 8 AM the stand operators from Marshe di Rincon started setting up their merchandise and food venues. Many different breakfast items were offered for sale. Around noon the air was filled with the aromas of local items like kabritu stobá, piská hasá and the likes. The sweet-tooth folks were not forgotten either. There was an abundance of cakes, pastries and other sweet items like Kokada (sweetened coconut shavings) for sale. And of course there was the handiwork of all the Rincon artisans.
The Arte i Kultura Foundation was asked to take charge of the musical part of the day and also made sure there was a well stocked bar. The foundation requested the presence of the musical groups ESO and Tutti Frutti. Orguyo di Rincon dance group entertained the public as well. Needless to say that most of those present got on the dance floor eventually.

Another event that drew a crowd was the face-painting. Mimi Donker never even got a chance to get up to sample some of the cuisine due the long line of children which just did not diminish.  At one point even grown-ups lost their shyness and asked to get a face-painting treatment.  As with all other activities, face painting was a huge success.

It was estimated that more than a thousand people joined in the celebration of the Bonaire National Park’s 40th anniversary. A total of 130 cars went inside to enjoy what the park so uniquely offers; undisturbed nature.

STINAPA would like to thank COMCABON, Fundashon Marshe di Rincon and  Fundashon Arte i Kultura for their tremendous cooperation and participation. It was a wonderful day and the people of Bonaire once again demonstrated their love of nature and Bonaire. Everything went very smoothly.

Read more in the next edition of “MAKUBEKEN”, the free newspaper STINAPA and its sponsors of the “NOS TA BIBA DI NATURALESA” campaign distribute. This newspaper is full of information about nature and the environment of Bonaire. It will be released again at the end of June and the whole population of Bonaire will receive it free of charge in their mail box.
