STINAPA’s Department of Education started with a new group of ‘Junior Rangers’ on the 20th of august this year. There are 10 participants in this group.
The ‘Junior Rangers Training Program’ is a program designed specifically for youngsters between the ages of 12 and 18, who are attending the high school; SGB. In cooperation with Jeugd Huis Jong Bonaire, the organization which offers after school activities to the high school children, STINAPA offers this program to the youngsters.
The objective of the program is to create awareness amongst our youngsters about the importance of the protection and conservation of our nature in regards to our economy and to us as human beings.
We also like to stimulate our youth in such a manner that they would choose a career in the field of protection of nature and environment. In January 2006, STINAPA started a training course for the first group of ‘Junior Rangers’. This group consisted of 8 youngsters. Now the second group of youngsters will start their training. The training program will consist of; public speaking, computer skills, diving course; ‘Open Waters’, general information about STINAPA, mechanics, boating skills, information about coral, information about fish, First Aid, snorkeling, information about sea turtles and information about nature and environment.
For all these courses the youngsters will have to pass an exam in order to check if they understood the material. It is imperative for them to understand the material so that they can assist the Rangers of the two parks; Bonaire National Marine Park and Washington Slagbaai National Park which are under the management of STINAPA.
The training will be an interesting one. It is vital to have groups of young people aware of the importance of our nature. Youngsters who understand what the contribution of Bonaire’s nature is to the economy of the island and what it means when we say ‘Nature is our livelihood’.
