July 20th, 2007: First sign for the buildings at WSNP
Recently the first sign was placed at the visitor center at Washington Slagbaai National Park entrance. This is the first of many more signs that will be installed informing the public about the history of the old buildings as well as to thank the sponsors.
The little shop at the entrance of the park, was built in 1920, and used to be the commercial center of the plantation called Amérika. This was where the produce of the plantation was weighed and exchanged for staples such as oil and sugar. In those years money was seldom used.
Fernando Simal, park manager, placed the first sign on the day Linda Goldman was celebrating her 50th birthday. Linda and her husband Jeff donated the materials to build the roof over the visitor center at the park’s entrance. They are frequent visitors of Bonaire and came this time especially to celebrate Linda’s birthday with their local friends on the island they consider home.
